Current rumors are that Mr H. Oxenham, of Sydney, is the present owner of Nelson j and that he gave 5,000 guineas for the New Zealand champion Count Vasili, in his last contribution to the ‘ Nouvelle Revue,’ deals with the fiscal resdurces of Leo XIII. and the use he makes of them. First of all, Pius IX., on dying, left in the Pontifical treasury a sum producing LI 20,000 a-year. This capital is invested in State funds. To the revenue thus left must be added a sum almost equal in amount furnished by the Peter’s Pence fund, which has fallen off of late years. The ordinary Budget of the Holy See is. consequently L 240.000 per annum. Leo XIII. receives nothing from it. It is distributed by the major-domo of the Vatican artidng the Cardinals residing in Rome—about LI ,000 a-Vear eabh—the prelates of the Court, the secretaries, the, nunhioS, the Pontifical army, etc. The extraordinary budget is derived from a third source, supplied by the receipts of the Apostolic Chancellery. ’ The produce of these various branches of revenue is about LIOO,OOO a-year. Count Vasili denies that Leo XIII. is avaricious; on the contrary, no Pope ever gave moie. His Holiness keeps nothing for himself. As for his table, it resembles that of a poor country curate. His clothes cost him nothing, being supplied by the faithful from all parts of tho world. _ He scarcely keeps a penny to enrich even his own family. The dowry he gave to his favorite nephew, Camille Pecci, did not reach L 4,000, while as for the presents he made to the bride, they were of the poorest kind. On the other hand, he spends a great deal in raising the prestige of his Court, creating schools, relieving the poor, and maintaining the Catholic Press.

A great hospital has been opened in Prance for the cure of the disease which the d ootors call morphiomania, and which has made formidable headway all over the country. Emin Bey has freed from the slave trade a province containing 10,000,000 inhabitants.
