A fire broke out at one o’clock this morning in Heron’s bakery—a large two-storey brick building at the rear of a confectioner’s shop in Emerson street. Six men slept upstairs, and when they discovered the fire the staircase was in flames, and that means of escape was cut off. Naked as they were, they jumped out by the window and sprung on to the iron roof of a lean-to, which was red hot. They saved their lives, but were terribly burned.
