THE LATE WILLIAM DENNY.

' The many friends in N«r Zealand of Mr Peter Denny, ofHumbartovwill regret very piucb to learn .that cable news has been received here of the death-of his eldest son and partner, Mr Williain Denny, The loss is a severe one, not only to the family, to Dumbarton, and to the great industry with which Mr William Denny was identified, but to the whole West of Scotland. Mr Denny was not only at the head of his profession as an engineer and shipbuilder, put took a deep and active interest in promoting the social and political welfare of his fellows. A''tnan of great intellectual capacity, his active brain was always at work devising schemes for the good, of the community in which he lived, and he was ready at al times to give his assistance, both b word and deed, to all projects having for their object the advancement of knowledge and the improvement of the position of the working population. Of broad views and wide sympathies, he was a fluent and ready speaker, and his powerful advocacy was ever found on side of liberty and progress. His incisive intellect and clear judgment will be missed at the councils of the many learned and technical societies of which he was an active member. Cut off in the very prime of life—he was under forty—full of hope and great ideas, and in the enjoyment and pursuit of a career of active usefulness, his loss is one to be deplored by all who have the best interests of humanity at heart.
