PROTECTION OF ANIMALS.

The half-yearly meeting of members of the Otago Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals was held at the Town Hall yesterday. His Excellency the Governor presided, and there were also present, besides A few ladies, the Revs. Dr Stuart, Torrance, Edwards, and Lichtenstein, Messrs R. K. Murray; R. H. Leary (Mayor), E. C. Quick, T. Dick, G. Fenwick, J. Hardie, A. E. W. H. Taggart, Shaw, P. Mitchell, W. Hutchisoh; and J. Stone. His Excellency moved the adoption of the report, remarking that ho was glad to see a great improvement on previous occasions, inasmuch as the attendance was good, and there were some ladies among those present. After a few remarks on the objects of the Society, and the great benefits that resulted from his work, the speaker concluded by proposing the adoption of the report. • Dr Stuabt seconded the motion in a few appropriate words. The motion was carried mm. con. Mr Dick said he had been asked to move that His Excellency be asked to become patron to the Society, and he was glad to say that Sir W. Jervois had already consented to take that position. The motion waß seconded by Archdeacon Edwards and carried by acclamation. The Rev. Dr Lichtenstein moved, and Mr 6. Fenwick seconded, that Mr Justice Williams be re-elected president, which was carried unanimously. On the motion of Mr Murray, seconded by Dr Stuart, Mr T. Dick and Mr G. Fenwick were re-elected vice-presidents.

Mr Quick moved the election of a ladies’ committee, which was seconded by Mr Hardie and carried, Mr Torrance moved the re-election of the General Committee of last year, which was carried.

Honorary solicitors, auditors, and veterinary surgeons were also re-elected, as well as the treasurer and secretary. Votes of thanks were passed to the Press, the police, and to the professional gentlemen who had given their services to the Society during the year. The meeting concluded with the passing of a hearty vote of thanks to the chairman.
