THE HARBOR BOARD.

The ordinary meeting of the Harbor Board was. held this afternoon. Present: Messrs Ross (chairman), Wales, A. Thomson, J. B. Thomson, Law, Cargill, Mackerras, Hialop, Adams, and Barnes. THE SEWAGE QUESTION. , Messrs Macassey, Kettle, and Woodhonse wrote drawing attention to the long-continued discharge of sewage into the harbor, and stating that in the opinion of the leading medical men of the City the health of the citizens was being impaired in consequence,—Referred to the Works Committee to report. REPORTS. The Finance" Committee recommended That proceedings should be taken for the recovery of accounts due by several persons who disputed them on .the ground that the goods charged for had been supplied for Government contracts. That the dues on wool and skins imported coastwise be abolished, as the whole revenue therefrom does not amount to more than LIOO a-year. That Messrs Fenwick and Kennedy’s application for the use of the kerosene bond be granted on their paying LSO. That the license fee for occupying the floating dock site be L3O. "That accounts amounting to L%95010s 8d be passed for payment.—Thereport was adopted, and on the motion of Mr Mackerras it was resolved “ That the secretary be instructed to write the Hon. the Premier requesting the Government to amend the Harbors-Act, 1878, clause 132, and danse 24 of the Amendment Act, 1886, so as to make it dear that only goods the absolute property of the Government when shipped are to be exempt from dues on being landed; and that this resolution he forwarded to the various Harbor Boards in New Zealand requesting their support.” The Finance Committee reported that the question of connecting the new wharf -with,lhe railway had been referred to the Chairman and Engineer; who had also been empowered to act in regard to Messrs Armour and Co.’s offer of piles. They recommended that Mr D.Law’s application for a boat-stage be granted, andthat a demand be made on all occupants of similar sites for a fee of 10s per annum.—Adopted.. The report of the Works and Finance Committee on the question of the extra work donp in connection with dredge 222 contained the following resolutions:—‘"That the sums recommended to be paid to the workmen engaged in laising dredge 222, as placed by the Engineer opposite their respective 'names, be paid to them. . That a sum of LSO be paid- to the inspector and a sum of L 7 to Mr Moss for extra services rendered in connection with raising dredge 222. That the consideration of the general question of overtime be deferred, and that a report to obtained on the question from the Engineer, to be submitted to a future meeting of the Committee.”—Adopted. THE BAB. Mr A. Thomson proposed, and Mr Adams seconded—” That the attention of the Engineer be directed to the continuous shoaling of the bar, and be requested to report as to the propriety of commencing the mole on the south side of the Harbor, as recommended by Sir John Coode.” Messrs Wales and Cargill strongly condemned the passing of ouch a resolution, arguing that the present works at the Heads were being prosecuted with all the success which was anticipated. Mr Law was of opinion that the bar wps shoaling up, and that the mole was not doing its wow. The Chairman said the motion was such that he would require notice to to given of it Mr Thomson said to would give notice of it for next meeting. ' Tto Boas then went into Committee.
