ENCROACHMENTS ON ST. CLAIR.
TO THE EDITOB. SIE, —The sea appears to be having its own way at St. Clair. It ha?, as everybody knows, undermined the stone wall and washed down some of the roadway. The fact that so little encroachment has been made by the sea since the fall of the wall shows that it would not require a good deal to be done to prevent further damage. When at Hokitika some years ago I observed that the back premises of the houses fronting one of the principal streets were protected from the sea by a row of drapery or other packing cases, one or two deep and high, filled with sand. On inquiry I was told this was found sufficient to keep the sea back ; that before this was done the sea used occasionally to come over the beach and find its way through the houses into the street,—l am, etc., J.
