{Per United Press Association.] AUCKLAND, Jolt 10. W. Slater, a settler, was killed yesterday by a tree falling on him. The evidence in the Petrel case was concluded to-day. Mr Cotter addresses the Court for the defence on 'Wednesday. Mr Justice Gillies this morning passed a sentence of seven- years' penal servitude on George M'Coslin, who was convicted of arson. An inquest was held to-day on the body of the .boy Taylor, who was burnt to death at Mount Eden. A verdict of " Accidentally burnt" was returned. Mrs Taylor, who had received serious burns in endeavoring to save her child, fainted twice while giving evidence. . NEW PLYMOUTH, July 10. The police have been all called away to Hawera, to remove a lot of Natives who have squatted upon some land belonging to Mr Lysaght at Mokoia, and commenced building there. The trespassers had been warned off, but they treated the, notice with indifference, saying that the Europeans were using their land and they had to occupy the pakeha's land. There are only twelve Natives connected with the affair.
[Prom Our Own Correspondent.] LAWRENCE, July 10. The man Watt, who was injured at Wetherstones, died this morning. His life was insured with the Australian Mutual Society for L'2oo. Deceased, who was fortyfour years old, leaves a wife and four children.
