The inquiry as to the grounding of the Taupo war held at Auckland yesterdav before Sir H. F Anderson and Mr W J. Moat, J.P.s, and Captains Frater and Todd, nautical assessors. After hearing evidence the Court considered that Captain Sl ‘Coll took all possible precautions, considering the state of the weather, and did not feel justified in dealing with his certificate. An order was made as to costs. The certificates of the other officers were returned. The Hauroto lef' Dunedin wharf at 5 p.m. yesterday for Sydney via Oamaru and Cook Strait. The Government torpedo boat arrived at Port Chalmers this morning from Oamaru. The Mahinapua arrived at Port Chalmers at 7 a m. to-day. She left Lyttelton at 6 p.m. of the 4th inst. ; called at Akaroa, and arrived at Timaru at 11 a.m. 01 the 6th inst.; left again at 6 p.m. and arrived as above, having met southerly winds and moderate weather to a'rival. The Waihora left Dunedin wharf this afternoon for Melbourne via the Bluff and Hohart. The ship Lyttelton, in tow o( the Kopu'ai and Plucky, rfhs brought up tho channel and berthed at 6 pm. yesterday at tho new cross wharf. She has between 1,800 and 1,000 tons of general cargo aboard, and was drawing 18ft 3in forward and 17ft 9m aft. She commenced to discharge cargo this morning. The Beautiful Star, from Oamaru, arrived at Port Chalmers on Wednesday evening and passed up to Dunedin. ~ , L _ , . The ‘Oamaru Mail says that tho late Captain Whitson was born at Elyth, Forfarshire, in about tho year 1841, so that he was at tho time of his death about forty-five years of age. His people were farmers, and his father is still alive and pursuing that avocation. He came to the Colony twenty-six years ago in the Lady Egidia, from which ho deserted. He subsequently worked at Otcpopo at anything his hands could find to do. Afterwards, returning to a seafaring life, he entered the service of Patrick Henderson, and afterwards Shaw, Savill, and Co., with whom he remained for twenty years. In one sense he was the father of the froz-n-moat trade, he having taken the first cargo of meat from New Zealand (Port Chalmers), and the first from Oamaru, to which place he was a staunch friend. As captain of the ship Dunedin it is known to many how ho, I y timely attention, saved the first cargo of frozen meat entrusted to his charge, and thus prevented tho trade from being blighted in i s infancy. Having been “launched with his ship" he was master of her until incapacitated by sickness, a period of twelve years, during which he met with not a single mishap. We learn that ho was a widower, his wife having died four years ago, leaving him with two daughters (aged twelve and seven years) who are still living at Homo. It is also said that his life is insured for LI,OOO. At the time of his death Captain Crouch, Acting Harbormaster, and Miss Handley, of the Ciiterion Hotel, were with him.

Wellington — Kotamil arrived 9 a.m. from Lyttelton : sailed S p m. for Nelson. Nelson.-Hawea arrived 7 a.m from Now Plymouth ; sailed 10 a in. for Wellington. Manukau.—Wanaka arrived 6.30 a.m. from New Plymouth; returned 11.15 a.m. Auckland.—Ohau sailed 2 p m. for Greymouth.
