Suicide of a Popular Artist.
Joseph Aigner, an artist, who had his day of celebrity as a portrait painter, has committed suicide by hanging himself at his villa near Vienna. He was secretary of the Literary Concordia Club, so that his death has shocked a large circle of friends. Aigner, who was tho sou of a workman, was born in 1815, and he had already acquired some fortune and reputation as a painter when the revolution of 1848 broke oub His popularity among artists got him elected commandant of the insurgent Academy Legion, an honor which subsequently led to his being arrested by Prince Windischgratz’s orders, tried by courtmartial, and sentenced to death. He was pardoned at tho intercession of some ladies of the Austrian aristocracy ; aud some years later Prince
Windischgratz sat to him for a portrait. On that occasion the grim field-marshal asked Aigner avliv he had been sentenced to be shot. “If your Highness has forgotten, I shall do well not to remind you,” was the answer.
