THE COURTS TO-DAY.
CITY POLICE COURT.
(Before E. H. Carew, Esq., R.M.)
Drunkenness.— A lice Duth and Patrick Nicholson, charged with this offence, were convicted and discharged.— Annie Currie asked His Worship to deal leniently with her, as she intended to go to her father in Melbourne. His Worship adjourned the sentence till this day weelc, so ns to allow the woman to pursue the course stated by Neglected Child.— Theresa Bickerstaff, aged two years and ten months, was charged with being a neglected child.—lnspector Weldon stated that this cUse was a somewhat peculiar one. The mother was an inmate of the Hospital when the child was born, and a young woman had in a manner and to all intents and purposes adopted it, representing to her husband, who was a sailor, that it was her own child. She left Dunedin to go to a situation in Canterbury, leaving the child in the care of a young girl, and she now denied that the child was hers. Facts proved that this statement was correct.—After evidence, His Worship committed the child to the Industrial School. Maintenance William Hinde was charged by his wife with disobeying an order of the Court calling on him to contribute towards the maintenance of his child.—Mr A. S. Adams appeared for the plaintiff. —Letters were read from the defendant, who stated that he was quite willing to take personal charge of his child.—The case was adjourned for a month, so that Hinde, who is a miner at Cardrona, might be further communicated with.
Thomas Dustin, charged with failing to contribute towards the support of his mother, Mary Ann Rogers, did not appear, and the case was adjourned for a week.
