TERRIBLE LABOR RIOTS AT CHICAGO.

FIVE POLICE AND FIFTY RIOTERS KILLED.

A PANIC IN THE CITY

[By Electric Telegraph.—Copyright.] [Reuter’s Telegrams.]

NEW YORK, May 5. (Received May 8, 1886, at 11.45 a.m.)

The labor riots at Chicago have now assumed a very serious phase. A meeting of the Socialists, numbering fully 15,000 men, was held yesterday in that city. The police authorities ordered the crowd to disperse, but the Socialists offered a stubborn resistance, throwing explosive bombs among the police, killing five of them, and wounding many others. The police then fired upon the rioters, fifty of whom were shot dead, and a largo number wounded.

The greatest consternation prevails in the city, business being to a large extent at a standstill.
