In order to meet the convenience of the t-avelllng public, the U S S Company havo decided to run the ltingaroomi to tbe E«t Ccas!-, as an auxiliary to tho regular weekly boat, during the rnnvindcr o the bu §y season. A NEW BOAT. Owing to tho strong N E wind on Saturday the launching of the new boat built by Mr W. Murray for the New Zealand Shipping Companv w»a postponed until to-dav. The boat is intended for the purpose of transhipping the passengori and luggage from the mail steamers to tno tug outsldo tno Heads. Since the mail contract tho work of transhipping has been done by a large whaleho»t, and although the weather has proved fairly favorable, with the exception of last Saturday on the arrival of the Tongariro, thero were many difficulties, owing to the boat being too small, and the Company decided to build a hoat suitable for tho purpose. The work of constructing her was entrusted to Mr W. Murray, and wo mu-t congratulate him on tho work he ha 9 tu-ncd out, but In our opinion this boat, or any other of the same class, will be utterly ÜBcleis 11, on tho arrival ot the mail steamer, tho weather should he similar to Saturday last, as it would 'e dingcrous to attempt to tranship females and children outside the Heads into an open beat. This has been d"no hitherto with vry grave danger, and although no actual accident has occurred yot, we aro iwarc that on one occasion a lady was in great danger of loting her leg by contact between the foot of tho ladder of tho mail steamer and tho small boat into which she was about to get. Again, the sea must be very smooth, indeed, outside Otaeo Heads in oider to allow passengers being transhipped with anything like comfort. At present, if th<\y get Into the whaleboat without danger, they are on arriving alongside tho sma'l steamer pitchforked into her like a bale of goods; Indeed, wo aro sure the process must be a very dist.teful one to ladies The new boat is what is technically known ai clinker-buiH and copperfastened, her length being Mt. breadth of beam Oft, and depth amidships 3ft 6in, her keel and kelson being of bluigum, and her planking kauri pine, her timbers being of goai and her knees of hardwood. Sho is decked forward ar.d aft, Vcing open amidship-, and fitted with moveable seats fore and aft. Sho is rigged as a " French lug," tho sails being made by Mr James Thomson, of Dunedin.
