POLLUTION OF THE KAIKORAI.
TO THE EDITOR.
Sir,—We have heard a good deal lately about the nuisance in tho Kaikorai arising from Mr Durston's bone and tallow works. There was a petition presented to the Roslyn Council last night by the workers of Ross and Glendining's factory, signed by about ninety names. The petitioners say that the smell has been very bad for about three months, that the water in the stream has been polluted, and that some of the people had lost their appetites. One of the petitioners stated that he had been working nine months in Mr Durston's factory. Now if it is as bad as complained of, how did he live so long? I ask the petitioners to ask themselves honestly which of the two factories will pollute the stream the more? The councillors should go and see the men who work at Durston's, and see if they have the appearance of being unhealthy. I think their health will stand against any one. "Live and let live" is my motto.—l am, etc., Fair Play. Kaikorai, January 22.
