ADMINISTRATION OF THE LICENSING ACT.
Mr J. W. Jago, as spokesman of the deputation that waited on the Premier during his recent visit to Dunedin and brought under his notice the unsatisfactory administration of the licensing laws, received the following letter to-day from the hon. gentleman : J. W, Jago, Esq., Dunedin. Sin,—l have been directed by the Hon, the Premier to inform you that lie has brought the matter of the defective enforcement of the licensing laws urged upon him by the deputation that waited upon him in Dunedin on the 23rd October last, together with a suggestion by Mr Inspector Weldon, that a certain portion of the police force should be employed specially on that duty, under the notice of the Hon. Ooratnissionor of Constabulary, and I am now to state that it is considered such an arrangement would hardly work, inasmuch as it is anticipated the effect would be to make the members of the force not specially detailed for the work indifferent to that portion of their duties. —I am, etc., Alex. Willis. Premier’s Office, Wellington, November 21,1885.
