THE HARBOR BOARD.

The Harbor Board met this afternoon ; present Messrs Ross (chairman), Mill, Duncan, Barnes, Elder, Hislop, Wales, W. Thomson, Reid, J. B. Thomson. WORKS REPORT. The Works Committee’s report, as published by us yesterday, was submitted, and after a slight passnge-at-arms between Mr Elder and Mr Reid as to the necessity and cost of works in the Upper and Lower Harbors respectively, it was adopted. In the course of his remarks with reference to the extension of the wharf, Mr Reid said that there was money in hand, and that whatever other works in the Upper Harbor mi'dit be necessary money would be forthcoming for them, notwithstanding the croaking and enmity of Mr Elder. finance report. The Finance Committee reported re dues on Government goods—that the replies received from the majority of the Boards to whom circulars were sent on the subject being in favor of an amendment of the Harbors Act of 1878, with a view of repealing the exempting of Government goods from paying dues to local bodies, they recommend the Board to take steps with a view of repealing the exemption clauses. The secretary is to make further inquiries re the position of the Fernhill Company in connection with its leases. —The Committee cannot recommend any reduction in Mr F, Meenan’s rent.—That an exchange of leases with Captain Fox be agreed to if he will take sections 5 and 6, Bridge block, for seven years. —Me the Port Chalmers pier-master’s salary, the Committee recommend that a reply be sent to the Minister of Public Works that until the Board receives possession of the wharves at Port Chalmers it does not see why it should be called on to pay the pier-master’s salary.— Me taking a strip of land off Dock Endowment by Public Works Department, that hj copy of plan be sent to the Premier, with a letter pointing out that the frontage to George street is being taken and the
