SPORTING INTELLIGENCE.

First Day—Saturday.

The wea'her io-day was lovely, and as a natural consequence there was a capital attendance. The course was in splendid order. The results up to the time of our going to presß are as follow: —

Handicap Hukdlk Rack, of 70 sovs. The second horse to receive 10 sovs from the stakes Two miles and a distance Mr J. Cotton's ch e Trapper, aged, 9st 71b (J.Cotton) 1 Mr J. Kerr's b g Lin wood, sited, 9*t 101b (T.Stewart) 2 Mr A. Smith's b g Little John, aged, lOst 61b (Poole) 3 MrP. Laing'sbre Glenara, 5 yrs, 9st 121b (Allan) 0 Betting: 6to 4 against Trapper: 2to 1 Little John ; 3 to 1 the others. Glenara took the lead and passed the Btand two lengths ahead ot Linwood and Little John, the favorite acting as whipperin. For three-quarters of a mile there was no change in these positions, but at this juncture Glenara ran round a hurdle and was seen no more in the race. Little John then took up the running a length or two in front of Trapper and Linwood, who followed on side by side. Passing the stand the second time Trapper had run up alongside Little John, and the pair cleared the hurdle simultaneously. Thereafter Little John took a slight lead, but it waß evidently only on bufirance, for Trapper was pulling Cotton almo.t out of the saddle, and as they neared home he went to the front and won with great ease by a length from Linwood, Little John being eased up as soon as Poole saw his chance was hope.'ess, and finishing last. Time, 4win 433e0. Of L 552 in t- e totalisators, L 192 was on tho winntr. Dividends : Inside, L2 12s 6d; outside, L2 6s 6d. Maiden Plate, of eo sovs. One mile and a-quatter. Weight for age. Wright's ch g Cassowary, 3 yrs. 7st 91b (Taggart) 0 Betting : 5 to 4 against Rubezahl, 2 to 1 Puck, S to 1 any other. A capital start was effected at the first attempt, but Eubezahl was quickest away, and led for a couple of hundred yards. _ He was then steadied, and Ouida went on in the lead, followed by the favorite, with Ravenswood third, Puck and Cassowary in the extreme rear. GoiDg round to the right Ouida drew still farther ahead, and Ravenswood took second place, a half-length in front of Rubezahl, on whom Puck was gradually closing; Cassowary mean*bile tailing off last. At three-quarters of a mile Rubezahl and Ravenswood drew up to the leader, and as they neared the Btraight Pack also cime with a rush, a splendid race ensuing all the way from here to the finish. Rubezahl, however, always kept his head in front, and, stalling off a very determined effort on the part of Puck, Myers won a fine race with a bit up his sleeve by a head, while only the same distance separated Puck and Ravenswood. Time, 2min 21see. Of L 645 in the totalisators, L 251 was on Rubezahl. Dividend : Inside, L2 ss.

St. Andrew's Hasdicap. of 300 sovs., with a sweepBtakes of 6 sovs each for acceptors; the second horse to receive 60 sovs, and the Uiird horse 30 sovs from the stakes. One mile and a-half. Mr D. Betting: 6 to 4 againßt Taiaroa, 5 to 2 Ike, 4 to 1 Nelson and Sou'-wester, 8 to 1 Johnny Faulkner and Lady Evelyn, 10 to 1 Adamant.

There was some little trouble at the post, but at last the lot were sent well away together with the exception of Nelson, wheee rider was taken unawares, and thereby lost a few lengths. The eolorß o! Taiaroa, Johnny Faulkner, and Sou'-wester showed in the lead, but before a quarter of a-mile had been covered Lady Evelyn had passed Johnny Faulkner and Sou'-wester and taken Becond place. This she held past the Btand, at which stage Johnny Faulkner and Sou'-wester still lay in good positions, a bit ahead of Ike, Adamant, and Nelson. At the turn Taiaroa increased the gap between himself and the rest of the field to three or four lengths, and at the far Bide looked like running clean away with the race. Lady Evelyn, who had dropped bick fourth, here came again, and at a mile and a-quarter was within two lengths of the favorite, with four or five lengths separa'ing her from Sou'-wester and Johnny Faulkner, behind whom came Ike, with Adamant and Nelson evidently out of it. Coming round the home turn Taiaroa still held a commanding lead, but Lady Evelyn was at his heels, and Johnny Faulkner coming very fast. The whip was pulled out to Lidy Evelyn at the distance, and then it looked a certainty for Taiaroa, but a few strides farther on Boyle was seen to move on him, and then give him a reminder also. The favorite gamely answered the calls made on him and without swerving an inch darted on towards the winning-post, but amidst intense excitement Johnny Faulkner came with a rush on the inside and snatched tha verdiot from Taiaroa by the shortest of noses. Lady Evelyn finished splendidly under the whip, and was only beaten by three parts of a length for aeoond place, while Ike was fourth. Time, 2min 42sec. Of LI, 150 in the totalisatora, LBS was on Johnny Faulkner. Selling (Two-year-old) Race, of 100 sovs. Colts, Bst 51b; fillies, Bst. No allowance for geldings.
