GERMANY AND NEW BRITAIN.
An Adelaide journal recently referred to an alleged intention on the part of Germany to proclaim a protectorate; over the New Britain group.-in the Western Pacific. Official correspondence between toe German ambassador in Loudon ahd Earl Granville shewed that the German Government, With the view to the protection of German commercial interests in the New Britain group, had decided to establish a protectorate, and bad ordered the Consul-General for the South Sea islands, Dr Stnebel, resident at Apia, to send immediately a commission to Matopin, in-New Britain, to proclaim a protectorate. It was stated that if; was not impossible that the German commission would arrive at New Britain before Commodore Erskine arrived at New Guinea. , As giving color to this statement, the German corvette Elizabeth left Port Jackson for Apia a few weeks ago, It was then stated she would proceed from Apia to Japan, but it a German protectorate over New Britain was intended the real destination of the ship after leaving Samba would be declared,
