CHRISTMAS SHOW.
A good number of the shopkeopers are this year debarred from making their usual good Christmas show owing to Christmas Day falling on a Tuesday, this preventing butchers at.d poulterers from making a display on Saturday, as their particular goods would not keep until Tuesday, while by this evening the goods on Bale will be disposed of. It is, however, satisfactory to know that the quality of the Christmas faro provided is not a whit below the avorage, but rather above it; both meat and poultry being this year of unusually good quality. Of the butchers, Mr J. Vuey, of Princes street south, has some fine bullocks from the Seadown Estate, splendid sheep and lambs, and nice young dairy-fed poik. Mr H. Parsons and Mr A. Hellyer, a'so of the south end of the town, show some fine meat; while Mr S. G. amlth, of the City Butohery, has Borne beautiful beef from Gladbrook Btation, sheep bred by the Hon. M. Holmes and Bcgg Bros , of Hlllend, and lambs from Mrs Nimmo's farm at the Taieri, This firm notify that this evening they will give a joint of meat to anyone bringing an order from a clergyman of the City or a member of the Benevolent Institution's Committee. Mr W. Patrick, of Maolaggan street, exhibits some very excellent bullocks bred at his Balmoral Farm, merino sheep that gained first prize at the recent Agricultural Show, half-bred mutton from Mr Smith's Greenfield station, and lambs bred by Mr John Shaw, of North Taieri. The quality throughout is particularly good, and the shop is very well arranged. Down George street way there are several fine shows, Mr W. Loggie's being particularly good, while Mr Dornwell exhibits some splendid beef. Messrs Alexander aud Shepherd also have some fine beef, sheep, and lambs; and Mr Pearce, in Frederiok street, has a good display. Farther down the Valley Mr Bransgrove and Mr D. Bethune show some capital meat. Of poultry there is a capital show, the quality being above the avei age of many years past. Mr Jewitt, of princes street south, has some Bplendid turkeys, geese, and ducks ; so also has Mr H, Lamer, who adds fruits of all kinds to hit display. Mr W. Booker, of George street, shows some excellent geese, turkeys, f*wls, and dooks; together with a fine assortment of strawberries, cherries, and other fruit, as well as ppas, new potatoes, an 4 various kinds of vegetables, Among the fruiterers the principal at the south end of the town are Mr W. Bull, who has some fine strawberries, cherries, and other varieties of fruit; and Mr Sllverstone, who shows some splendid "Sir Joseph Paxton" strawberriss among a good assortment of fruits. Mr J. J. Pryor has in both his George and Princes street shops a grand lot of exhibits of fruit and poultry. la the former establishment he has some fine tuikeys and geese, while his ducks and poultry generally are fully up to the average. Messrs Dunning Bros., of Princes street, Bhow some fine fruit, and their shop is set tff to the boat advantage wi hj ferns and eveigreens. Mr K. M'Quaid, of George street, has also a grand assortment of fruit, vegetables, and poultry, The confectioners have come out in good force, Mr Broadway, of 4 Rattray street, making a particularly fine display of cakes. French fruits, crackers, confectionery, and other goods suitable to the season ; while his shop is set off with evergreens and Chinese lanterns. Mr J. Donaldson, of the Glasgow Pie House, has a capital Bhow of cakes and general confectionery; and other shops throughout the town, but too numerous to mention, have special attractions. "0| the growers. Messrs'A, and J. M Farlane, of Princes and ijfaclaggap BtreeK show their shops eft to great advantage; and the same may be said of'Messrß Paterson and M'Leod, who appear to have been at particular pains to give their establishment a oreditable appearanoe. Messrß Irvine and Stephenson, of George street, mat e a specialty of their bacons and hams, but have also a fine assortment of general groceries, Messrs Eardsley and Son have an attractive assortment of groceries and soap; and Messrs Esther and fcaw 4 capital show of general groceries. In tca3 Messrs Nelson, fcfoate, and Co., have a tastefully arranged display. In King street Mr W. Wright and Mr G. Mitchell exhibit well arranged stocks. The booksellers' shop 3 are all well stocked with books tuitable for Christmas presents, and especially Is this the cao with Messrs J. Wilkie and Co. s establishmert. Hero and at the establishment of Mr Horsburgh in George street may be seen all varieties of books, albums, pictures, and other articles fitted for presentation purposes, many of the books being illustrated in a beautifully artistic manner.,. Of Christmas cards there is »Jgo g, good assortment, from the cheapest sorts uplo l&vely jjicfiures painted on Ivory. Mr Bralthwate nas a varied' collection of books suited to this season of the year, and he claims for them that they are obtainable of him at an unusually ohoaj} tssp. {n the* course of ouj? remarks we may have omitted several establishments that are worthy of notice, but our excuse must lie in the large number of shops that are making speoial display and the limited time at our disposal in which to inspect them.
