Rumors to the effect that the number of British troops in Egypt is to be increased have received official denial. The Royal Dublin Regiment of Fusiliers, who are under orders for Egypt, are only going as reliefs for troops whose period of foreign service is concluded. SEVERE FIGHTING BEFORE SONTAY. PARIS, December 29. The reported occupation of Sontay by the French troops is denied. Tho latest despatches to hand state that the French captured the outposts at Sontay, hut only after a stubborn fight, in which they lost fifteen officers and 200 men. The enemy’s loss was very heavy. The assault on Sontay fortress is to take place on tho 17th inst. [‘Akods’ Special to Press Association.] LONDON, December 20. (Received December 21, 1883, at 0.38 a.m.) Tho frozen meat by the British Queen is realising s£d per lb. The number of British troops in Egypt will shortly be increased to over 10,000.
