VOLUNTEER INTELLIGENCE.
The No. 1 Company City Guards were inspected last night by Captain Gordon, when there were present—2 lieutenants, 5 sergeants, and <"9 rank and file. After parade the usual monthly meeting was held, and Volunteers Creagh and Coventry were elected to represent the company at the meetings of the Otago Rifle Association, and Corporal J. Webster as its representative on the Ladies' Shield Committee. Lieutenant M'Grcgor then, on behalf of Mr Speight, presented to the winner (Corporal J. A. Webster) a very handsome electro-plated tea and coffee service, which was given as a prize to be competed for by the company by Messrs Speight and Co. Mr Speight said that as an old member of the company, and an old shot, he recollected Corporal Webster when he was a very young shot, and he really thought that good shooting was one of the qualities of No. 1 Company City Guards. He was glad to see the old company as enthusiastic as ever in that respect, and hoped to see the company the crack shooting corps, not only of Otago, but of New Zealand. Lieutenant Black thanked Mr Speight on behalf of the company, and said that as long as they had gentlemen like Mr Speight to come forward and encourage shooting, he had no doubt he would not be disappointed in his wishes for the future good reputation of the company. Mr Speight has offered another prize for competition by the company.
