ANGLING.

The first competition of the season, under the auspices of the Otago Anglers’ Association, took place yesterday. Owing to the very unsettled weather the fishing was not so good as might be expected at this season of the year ; still some good baskets were taken, and the excellence of our rivers and streams for the breeding of trout demonstrated. The weighing for Dunedin took place at Mr Melville’s, Princes street, and attracted a large crowd. The prizes offered were—For the heaviest basket of trout, fishing rod (presented by Mr W. Bremer); for the next heaviest basket of trout, fishing rod (presented by Mr J, A. Connell) { for the largest number of trout, three dozen flies (presented by Mr G. M. Marshall), also pocket-book and six cards (by Association); for six heaviest trout, Oolquhoun’s “Moor and the Lock„(presented by Mr J. WllWel. Special prizes: Heaviest basket of trout from Water of Leith, fishing rod (presented by Messrs Sargood, Son, and Ewen); heaviest basket trout from Waltati, pair of waterproof wading stockings. The weights were: Shag River, P. F. Stoddard, eighteen fish, weighing 241b lOoa; six heaviest, 151b 6oz ; largest fish, 41b Boz. J. 0. Short, twelve fish, weighing 131b fioz ; six heaviest, 101b 14oz; largest fish, 4)(lh, Leo Stream : G. Marshall, three fish, weighing 111b fi|oz ; largest fish, 41b fioz. Waitatl: 11. J. MTvenzie, jun., twentyfour fish, weighing 81b. Water of Leith Stream: W. Webster, thirty-five fish, weighing 111b 3oz; 0. Duncan, thirty-two fish, weighing 101b 4oz Returns have yet to come In from Tapanui, Kelso, Clinton, Balclutha, and Outram. The results will probably bo known on Monday next. .
