FEDERATION V. PROTECTION.
* A writer to the Sydney ' Daily Telegraph' remarks:—"As for federation, we can dispense with Victoria;' she can remain alone in all her glory. As soon as we reach iJ?.c other colonies by rail that can be conMr Berry does not seem to consider the great extent of our Colony, the consequent expense of transit and of government, and that, owing to that, Victoria has been a great gainer in our wool, etc. ; but as our railways advance the transit will be facilitated to Sydney. As for Mr Berry's statistics, they virtually show that the
balance is in everything on the side of New South Wales ; that our barometer is rising while Victoria's is falling; that our imports have increased since 1873 L 3,479,000, while Victoria's have decreased L 1,977,000; the exports of New South Wales have increased L 6,138,000, while Victoria's have only increased L 652.000. Our total trade has increased L 9,616,000. Even in marriage (not a bad criterion) the young men and maidens arc much more rapidly domesticated than under tho protective system. It is singular that as the Chinese and the Japanese are abandoning Protection we should be adopting it. The result with them was isolation and barbarism."
