The Evening Star MONDAY, APRIL 24, 1882.
The * Otago Daily Times' takes us to task for our unfavorable comments on the school attendance for the year 1881, as shown by the annual report of the Otago Education Board, and ingeniously endeavors to demonstrate that the average daily attendance does not give a correct idea of the attendance during the year, as compared with the number of children who attended "at all." We are quite aware that a number of children were coming and going every quarter in 1881; but this has always been the case, and does not affect the average daily attendance for purposes of comparison. Nor, again, is it correct to take, as our contemporary does, the average attendance of the last quarter—the summer quarter—which always much exceeds that of the other three quarters. If " the statistics do really show "that a high average of attendance is main"tained," it is odd that the Board in their report should specifically note that, " for the "first time since the institution of the Otago "Education scheme in 1856, the average " daily attendance shows a decrease;" whilst they express the opinion that "if compul"sory attendance were enforced the number "of children attending the public schools in "this district would be very much larger "tlwnitisnoio."
