Street. j Tin;; Company is formed for i'ae purpo.se of ! acquiring, developing, and extending the exist- | in- business of the Green Island Patent Stone Company and for manufacturing Portland j Comi*nt,"au article very extensively used in the i Coiony, at present wholly imported. PATENT STONE. The works are at Abbotsford, live miles from Duncdin, on the Main South line, and comprise suitable buildings, machinery, and everything requisite for successfully carrying on the manufacture of Patent Stone. The business hitherto has been the making of ! building blocks, flagging, kcrbing, channelling, i drain pipes, and every description of stone-work. \ A careful estimate has been made, which shows that, without additional machinery— I allowing liberally for cost of management and j c:;pon:vs generally, and paying 17s Gd per barrel j for imported cement—an pnnual profit of about j L'-YIOO can be realised on this industry alone. PORTLAND CEMENT. The Directors desire to call especial attention to their intended .manufacture of Portland Cement, which, as a new native industry, is of the greatest importance, and one that is certain to be very remunerative. A Go von intent bonus is attached to the manufacture of this article in New Zealand from colonial ingredients ; and the Green Island Parent ■Mom- Company has been successful in obtaining in.: order for JGO tons connected wii'li it. Tins i'i cor we; given from samples made by Mr C. IKVooni from materials found in abundance in the neighborhood of Abbotsford and Waihohi. The excellence of these samples is evident from the favonible reports made upon them by MrW. I'L Blair, who tested them on behalf of the Government, ami of Professor Black, the colonial analyst, who analysed them. The former slides: "The raw materials used in making ihe Green Island Cement are undoubtedly of the proper kinds, consequently the production of a high-class article is a mere matter of skill in the manufacture"; and the latter : " Prom these results I judge this to be an excellent sample of Cement. The valuable ingredients are present in the requisite condition in very good proportion. I have no doubt that, so far as chemical analysis can determine, this Cement is equal to any imnorted." The Judges of the recent Industrial Exhibition hold at Duncdin also testified to the excellence of these samples of Cement by awarding them First Order of Merit, which was also j awarded for the Patent Stone. { That Li)': establishment of this manufacture voiml be reinuiurative to the Shareholders is evident in;:*: Ji". face that, whilst Cement can j be manafaciatiaal asu soil in England at 8s fid i per barrel, here it is Worth Lorn la's to los, j showing the cost of freight, duty, and otuC j charges to be between 7s (id and f.ls (id per J barrel, which to a considerable extent maybe j relied upon.is profit to the Colonial Mana.faci iurer. I That the demand for Cement in this Colony j is ..'ry gioat is also evident from ihe fact that no lis.; thai; I.'fJ,l!fS barrels were imported into Ihe fair principal ports of New Zealand during the ye.-.r IS.'-iO, giving a total value of LI0!,'>!« as fat the low price of His per hairelj. tio:i of ."00 barn be L''.,C ;0.
