NO COUNTER COURTSHIP.
Ia the City of London Court, Miss Elizabeth Cobb, residing at Rotherhithe, sued the defendant, the proprietor of Lts TroisFrbren Restaurant, to reoover the sum of LI, being 12i wages, and 8s partial beard, in lien of a week's notice. Miss Cibb said she was engaged by the defendant aa barmaid at a weekly Balary of 12* and her meals. After, she had been in his fcervioe a fortnight he dismissed her on Saturday evening, September 11, without notiee, paying her money up to that day only. She now claimed in consideration of not having been given a week's notioe. The Commissioner: Do you hear that, Mr Evonden 1 Mr Eveadeo t Yes, sir ; but I made a special arrangement with this young lady that there should be no counter oourtship.—(Laughter.) The Commiasionsr : I see ; you to her having a Bweetheart. (Renewed laughter.) Mr Eveoden : That was the engagement made with her when I engaged her ; but, notwithstanding, she insisted upon paying special attention to one gentleman in preference to the others.-(Loud laughter.) The Commiesiocor: And what did you do 1 Mr Evendea : I warned her against it; tut Bhe persisted in her conduct, aid ia consequence I dismissed her. The plaintiff said she denied the oourting entirely. The defendant insisted upon its being true. The Commissioner: Well, how do you mean to prove i- ? I have not the name of the gentleman before me; but lam afraid that, to make out your case, you must call him to prove that ho oeurted the yoHng lady.— (Raws of laughter.) Tho defendant: His name to Mr Cole. The Commissioner : That is the guflty person ? Certainly it was very wroog of him—(laughter) -but I am afraid if ycu call Mr Cole he will, out of gallantry, say he did not court this young lady.—(Loud laughter ) Take my advica, Mr Evenden ; pay this young lady's claim, and for the future do not engigo good-looking young barmaids.—(Roara of laughter.) Verdict for the plaintiff accordingly.
