THE SEAMEN'S UNION.
TO THE EDITOE. „ Sir, —Will you allow me to contradict the statement made in certain quartf r3 that thirty-fivo men signed on tho Tararua'B artiolos. She may faßve had that number on the articles 5 but if uhs had why did they not have the men engaged aa sailors at their atationa when leaving the wharf, as it ia a customary thing when leaving this harbor for two sailnri to be ai the helm, with the second officer t9 repe-at tho instructions to fcham from tho captain off the bridge. Instead of that the Hecond officer wae tho only man at tha helm, aqd there were no signs of any Bailors at their U3ual atatlonß when leaving harbor. We are in receipt of a telegram'from the Bluff stating fihai two mou are wdrklag on bcrcrd, ead they r»re the ex-jccand maio and laTip.trimmyr, who were discharged hero on account t f being on bsard when the gold waa lost, Our telegram afco states that the ■rng'neera are down in the stoke-hole doing firemen's work. If they were practical men the engineers have ro occasion to go in the 3 f okohole to work at the fires,—l am, etc., S-iEpHEN GokdoK, President. Port Chahn-na, February 5.
