OTAGO RAILWAY EMPLOYED BENEFIT SOCIETY.
The annual meeting of this Society was held last evening, Mr Conyers, the president, occupied the chair, and about thirty members were present. The report congratulated the members on the prosperity of the Society. During the past year twenty-two new members had been enrolled and fifty erased as unfioancial or from other causes, leaving a total on the books of 310, including three honorary. The receipts during the year were LSI 3 13s 4d; the expenditure L 579 12 j Id. The amount to the credit of the Society was 1d,201 10a Bd, The amount disbursed for sick aliment was L 123 3s 4d, and that for funeral allowance L2O (to Mrs Gleeson, Oamaru). The Committee expressed regret that so many of the members were in arrears with their contributions, and strongly urged on them the desirability of making themselves good on the books as early as possible, and so save the necessity of the Committee enforcing clause 4 of rule 14.—The report was adopted nem, dis. The President (Mr Conyers) said that it might appear strange that he should occupy the position of president after he bad ceased to have any connection with the Railway Department. When he left the Railway Department he sent in bis resignation a? president, but at the earnest request of the Committee he had withdrawn it. He wished to express bis sense of gratitude for tho kindly feeling that had been shown towards him; but he thought it fair to draw their attention to the matter because that an officer connected with the Department could do more for them than he could,—(A Voice; “No.”) If they desired to elect him, he would be willing to do all he could for them ; but he did not wish to be elected, and suggested that someone connected with the Department would be in a better position as president to help the Society,—Mr Bdtchabt proposed, and Mr Matthkwson seconded the re-election of Mr Conyers as president,— Carried unanimously. Mr Grant was unanimously re-eleoted vice-president, and Mr C. de Clyford secretary. Messrs Pastier and Bell were elected auditors,
The following medical officers were reelected for the ensuing twelve months:— Drs Maunsell, Dunedin ; Stewart, Milton ; Smith, Balolntha; Withers, Lawrence; Brown, Palmerston; Bowie, Herbert; and Garland, Oamaru. Messrs Matthewaon, Peter M'Lean, J. Rogers, T, Mann, A. Fyfe, W, Crombie, C, Williams, B. Dawson, A, Davidson, Murphy, Michaelis, Hosker, and Haling were elected members of committee.
The salary of the secretary was increased to L 35, on account of extra work in connection with the Oamarudistrict; Mr Butchart (who has been transferred, at his own request, to Tapanui) was voted L2O in remuneration of tne, services he has rendered to the Society during the past five years; three guineas were voted to Mr 6. Leslie for assisting the Committee in revising, etc., the rales; Lsto Mr Fastier for four years’ service as auditor; and one guinea to Mr Dickson for service as auditor last year.
