In 1871 the Singer Manufacturing Company had twenty-four competitors, ffhose total annual sales were 424,834 maohines. In 1876, thirtoen competitors had gone out of business ; the total annual Bales of the survivors had fallen off 121,217 machines, and the annual sales of the Singer's leading com. petltor had fallen of? 19.529 machines. Meanwhile tho sales of the Singer Maohino increased from 181,260 to 262,316 machines, and even this onormous number, despite the "hard times," was still further inoreased in 1877 to 382,819 machines.
