CHRISTCHIJRCH, May 12.

An inquest was held on Dr Mark's body this morning, but nothing new transpired. The jury brought in a verdict "That deceased died from the effect of poison administered by himself." J. Harding, a billiard-marker at the Central Hotel, was charged with stealing a watch, of .the .value of LlO, and was committed for trial.

i WELLINGTON, Mat 12. The Court of Appeal was formally opened to-day by a full Bench of five judges. Henry Anderson, editor of the • Chronicle,' was brought up this morning, charged with having committed a deadly assault on one R. C. Easby, a blindmaker, in his own house. The information was amended to one of "wilfully and maliciously wounding Easby with a pair of tongs, such being an indictable offence." The magistrate said the case was of too serious a nature for him to deal with summarily. Anderson's counsel notified that kis client had laid a counter infermatioh of a precisely similar nature against Easby. After the evidence of Easby, who appeared to be much cut and bruised about the face, was taken, the case was adjourned till Wednesday. gsIJiSJ WANGANUI, May 12. An inquest was held to-day on Hugh M'Mahon, who died at the Red li >n Hotel. The jury returned a verdict of manslaughter against a Native named Tawaua. M "Mahon had been drinking heavily, and the medical testimony showed that te have been the primary cause of death, possibly accelerated by the blow struck by the man accused.

A boy named William Elliott, about five years of age, and son of John Elliott, who arrived here on Saturday on his way to Auckland, was drowned in a concrete tank at the rear of the Bay View Temperance Hotel yesterday. He was missed during the afternoon, when search was made everywhere, but ho trace of him was obtained until this morning, when his body was discovered in the tank. He is supposed to have lifted the lid, an 3, looking in, he list his balance and fell into the tank. TAPANUI, May 12. A large gang of men have been knocked off the Tapanui Railway works. The section is near Waipahi, and it is very important that it should! be completed. The jockey club liave arranged for a small meeting on.tbe Queen's Birthday.
