[From Our Own Correspondent.] OAMARU, Mat 2. The Chamber of Commerce presented the Governor to-day with a report in connection . with the proceedings of the Oamaru sub-com-mittee for the Sydney Exhibition. Oamaru being the centre of a district devoted to agriculture, the exhibits are to be chiefly confined to grain ; but besides this, wool, gold, and building stone would be forwarded. The Committee reiteiated the remarks made by the Dunedin Chamber, that the South Island should be represented at Sydney by some •duly accradite I ageat, and the report concluded by expressing pleasure at His Excellency having consented to assume the presidency of the New Zealand Commission. The Associated Insurance Agents decline tomake further payments to the Fire Brigade, on the ground that when making certain paymeita some timo ago they did so on tho understanding they were not to be asked for any mor<3 during the year. The City Council will give i ho. Fire Brigade L 75 to aid in purchasing uniforms. It any further sum ib required it will probably be supplied by the public.
After a good deal of discussion the motion to get the banks to tender for the city banking account wa* withdrawn.
The revenue col'.ectel in the port of Wellington last month was L 16.432, and for tno corresponding month last year, L 1.3,661. AUCKLAND, May 2. At a stormy meeting of the Grammar School Governors, a series of resolutions moved by Judge Heale, and supported by Judge Fenton and Mr O'Rorke were oarried, to the effect that the proper function of an endowed grammar school is to furnieh higher education than that attainable in common schools; that teaching young children elementary branches is contrary to the. school trust and injurious to secondary education; the grammar school course should commence at the highest point to which common school pupils can attain ; and the school ought to be open by means of scholarship to pupils fv«--m these schools M'ho succeeded in obtaining them.
