SALE OF RUNS.

The licenses of eleven runs in this Provincial district were offered for sale at the Land Office, Dunedin, to-day, at noon sharp. There was a largo attendance of persons engaged in pastoral pursuits and of those interested therein. Sir R. B. Martin officiated as auctioneer. There was only bidding for the runs in the Macraes district, ana for them tho competition was Very keen. Rumor says that the opposition to tho ro-leasing to £<jr F. D. Bell and Gellibraud and Co came maiuly from the local residents who had formed a company to secure, if possible, some portion of the country ; but the opposition did not prove successful. In another case Sir Francis was opposed by a. neighboring squatter. With two exceptions the runs fall into tho hands of the old lessees; and in one of these cases half of the run, which was subdivided, reverts to its former lessees. The results of the sale are considered highly satisfactory to the State, We subjoin details:—

JtCun No. 72a—A'oout 5,850 acres; license for ten years from Ist March, 1880. Situated in the Warepa district, about eight miles south of Clinton. Upset rent, Ll2O per annum. Possession from day of sale. Valuation Ll4 Bs, to be paid on the fall of the hrmmer. Knooked down at the upset prio to Stewart and Dalglfish.

Run No 96—About 2,900 acres; license for ten years, from Ist March, 1881. Situated in the Warepa district, about ten miles S.E. of Clinton Upset rent, L6O per annum. Possession on Ist June, 1880. Valuation, L 5. Knocked down at the upset price to Mr Robert Campbell, Kaihiku. Run No. 96a—About 1,970 acres: license for ten years, from Ist March, 1881. Situated m the Warepa district, about five miles touth of Clinton. Upset r»nt, L4O per annum. Possession on Ist June, 1880. Valuation, none. Knocked down at the upset price to the Messrs Anderson.

Run No 121—About 10," 80 acres ; license f.r ten years, from Ist Marcb, 1881. Situated in the Hummock distrct, ahoui five miles south of Macraes. Upjet rent L2OO per annum. P.s-es-sion on Ist April, 1880. Valuation, L3314s The payment in advance obiut 1 rear and 11 months.—Mr James Smith : When will the new laase comrnonce ?—Tho Auctioneer: Possession dates from April 1, ISBO but the license dates from Ist March, IS3I to 1882. The run was knocke.i down at L4OG to Q.liibrand and Smith. The bidding was confined to Mr Smith and Mr J Mackenzie, of Waihemo.

Kun No. 121a—About 9,800 acreß; license for 10 years, from Ist March, 1881. Situated in the Hummock district, :<b-<ut£ve miles south of Macraes. Upset rent f.200 per annum. Possession on It April, 1880. Valuation L 490 ss, t > run the same as the last. The s>une bidder* as for the last run, and it was knocked down at L 351 to and Smith.

Run No. 121b—About 3,350 a-sres; license for ten yeai s, from hi March, lt>Bl. Situated iu the Dunback distr ct, ahout three miles S.E. of Macraes. Upset rent, Ll2O per annum. Possession on Ist April, 1880 Valuation, 1333105. The upset having been offered. Sir F. D. Bell led off with a bid of L 250, and thereafter LlO bids came very quickly from Mr A. 0 Besrg and others. There was no pause till L 570 was ieiohed, when Mr Begg insisted on LI bids being taken. The run was kno.kjd down at L 572 to Sir F. D. Bell.

Run No, 121o—About 8.120 acres ; license for ten years, from Ist March, 1881. Situated in ibe JBudle district, about two mile* fouthof Macrae*. Upset rent, Ll2O per annum. Possession on Ist April, 1):8). Valuation, L 135. Knocked down to Sir F. D. Bell, at L2lO. Hun No. 12 Id—About 6,580 acres; license for ten years from lat March. 1881. Situated in the fcudle district, about one mile south of Macraes. Upset rent, Ll2O pennnum. Possession on Ist April, 1880. Valuation, L 416 10a. —A Mr B. Neil led off by offering L 250, and so curtailed Mr Martin's offices considerably. Sir P. D. Bell followed suit with a bid of 1300; a couple of LlO bids were offered afterward*, and at L 325 the run was knocked down to him.

Run No. 4 7 —About 26,400 acre 3; license for 10 years, fiom Ist March, 1880. Situated in the Upper Wakatipu district, aoout 30 miloj from Q aeemtown. Upset rent, L6O per annum. * v os*esßion from day of sale. 'Valuation L 145 104; to be paid on the fall of the hammer. Knocked down at the upset price to W. T. Dodds.

Run No. 420—About 32 000 acres; license for 10 years, from Ist March, 1889. Situated in tho Eyre district, about four miles west of Kingston. Upset rent 1.160 per annum. Possesion from day of sale. "Valuation L2OO, to be paid on the fall of the hammer. Knocked down at the upset price to Street and Morris, for W. S. Trotter.

The upset prices fixed by the Land Board represent a shade over the previous assessments paid by the runholders on the stockcarrying capacities of the runs.
