THE VOLUNTEERS.
Major Withers inspected the Bruce Rifles on Wednesday evening, there being on parade 1 captain, 1 lieutenant, 1 sublieutenant, 2 sergeants, and 31 rank and file. The 'Bruce Herald' states that the inspecting officer complimented the men on the steady and soldier-like manner in which they wont threugh their drill, saying that the whole of the movements had "been performed with a precision he had seldom if ever seen equalled by a volunteer corps, and that the Bruce Rifles wa3 decidedly the best drilled company lie had inspected since he left ArcVland. This fact was the more gratifying to him as he did not expect to find in an inland town, and especially at this time of the year, such a well-drilled body of men.—Yesterday Major Witherß inspected the Sandymount Cadets and the Portobello Rifles, the parade strongth being : Cadets—--1 captain, 1 lieutenant, 1 sub-lieutenant, 1 color-sergeant, 2 sergeants, 33 rank and file. Rifles—l captain, 1 lieutenant, 2 sergeants, 27 rank and file, 9 recruits. Major Withers to-day inspeclel the High School Artillery, there being on parade 1 captain, 2 lieutenants, 4 sergeants, and 6S gunners.
