RUNNING AWAY WITH A LOCOMOTIVE.
The Port Augusta correspondent of the 'S. A. Register,' writing on December 28, supplies it with the following strange story : —" A mysterious occurrence took place on the Port Augusta and Government Gums Railway the other night at Saltia. As the stoker was cleaning the engine at about midnight, preparatory to leaving for the night, a stranger accosted him, and having got into conversation asked him to have a drink, offering him a flask with brandy in it. The stoker says that he took a pull at the flask and almost immediately afterwards lost consciousness. On coming to he found himself still on the engine, which was proceeding at a very rapid rate towards Port Augusta. The other man was still on the engine, but before the stoker had time to speak to him he again lost consciousness, and when he again recovered the man was gone and the engine at a standstill The police have used every effort to discover the offender, but hitherto without success. They did apprehend one man on whom suspicion seemed to rest, but the stoker was not able to answer to him,, so they had to let him go."
