At yesterday’s sitting of tho Presbyterian Synod the Rev. Mr Watt gave notice of the following motion “ That this Synod views with satisfaction the steps recently taken by the Council of the University of Otago to secure for that institution an independent charter, and earnestly hopes that this action of tho Council may bo crowned with success.”
The damages claimed in the breach of promise case—Cayford v. Carruthers—which comes before the Supreme Court on the 27th inst., are L 1.500. The defence is that the allegedjpromise was obtained by fraud, the plaintiff having exhibited a false certificate said to be signed by a medical man. Mr Denniston appears for the plaintiff; Mr Smith (instructed by Mr F. W. Wade, of Invercargill), for the defence. A large number of witnesses have been subpoenaed on both sides, and the, case is likely to occupy some days.
A special meeting of the Dunedin School Committee, held at the secretary’s office this morning, was attended by Professor Mac. gregor, -Messrs Robin,_&herwin, and Ramsay (presiding). Miss Nichols, present head, mistress of the South School, was recommended to the Education Board for the appointment of head-mistress of the Albany stici t School. A meeting of the promoters of tho Roslyn Tramway Company was held last evening. Ihe nominal capital is to be Ls,ooo—onethird to be called up. The estimated Cost of the work is L 17.000.
The only business at the City Police Court this morning, before Messrs Begg and Church, J.P.’s, were the hearing of several charges of drunken and disorderly conduct, ihe accused were dealt with as follows : Sidney H. Davis, John Gillison, and James Jay t or were fined 5s each, with the alternative- O). twenty-four hours’ imprisonment; George Williamson, James Ritchie, William Thomson,- and Edward Morrison were fined 10s each, or forty-eight hours’ imprisonment.

There was a good downstairs and moderate circle attendance at the Princess’s last night, the performance being for Leon’s benefit. The features of the first part were Mr Fredericks’s “Hear the blue birds sing,” with a sweetly pretty piccolo accompaniment, and Mr Read’s “Star upon star is falling,” both of which were encored. Mr Read’s “ Maid of Athens ” was simply delightful, and was rewarded with enthusiastic applause. In the afterpieces “ Rose de 5~ ur . * ( w bich is an amusing traveatie on Offenbach’s trifle) and “Pygmalion and Oalatea, Loon was very amusing, and was ably aided by Messrs Kelly and Lester. The order of procedure in the public discussion between Messrs Bright and Green was arranged last night. On tho firat night Mr Green is to have half an hour for his opening address, and Mr Bright half an hour to reply; after which each gentleman is to be allowed, alternately, two speeches of a garter of an hour each. The second eight Mr Bright is to open in a twenty minutes’ speech, and Mr Green is to have a similar time. This is to be followed by two speeches each of a quarter of an hour, and one each ° u' Cn .minutes, completing the two hours. The third evening ia to be under the same regulation, with the exception that Mr Green leads. Mr A. H. Rosa presides, and will be assisted in time-keeping, &c., by Mr Robert Rutherford on behalf of Mr Bright, and Mr David Henderson for Mr Green.
A meeting of gentlemen interested in the formation of a new Club was held on Thursday evening at the premises which have been selected by the projectors of the Club—the Occidental Hotel, at the corner ef Manse street and High street. This locality has been chosen because of its being at the same time very quiet and yet close to the centre of the City, the Supreme Court, and other public offices. The premises as they stand, and the proposed alterations to them, wore considered, and it was decided that if a club of sufficient numerical strength could be formed there was nothing to hinder an early start, tho existing buildings being adapted to serve as a temporary club-honse ponding the erection of contemplated additions. The meeting adjourned till Saturday next, at 8 p.m., in order that a full attendance of intending members might bo secured, a managing committee formed, and tho date of opening the Club decided upon.
Tho annual public meeting of the Presbyterian Synod will bo held in the First Church on Monday evening at 7‘30. The annual meeting of members of the Dunedin Athenaeum will be held in toe lower hall on Monday, tho 27th instant, at 8 p.m. The South District Rifles have accepted the challenge issued by the North Dunedin Rifles to fire a match, ten men a-side. The date proposed is Saturday next.
Several alterations will be made in the time table of the Dunedin and Invercargill railway on and- after the 23rd lost., particulars of which' appear.m our advertising columns. The train leaving Port at 8.50 a.m. will leave ten minutes larler.
