THE CALEDONIAN SPORTS.

First Day—Wednesday. The annual gathering of the Caledonian Society of Otago commenced yesterday. The weather was very, favorable in the morning, but during the afternoon a cold wind sprang up, accompanied by a shower or two of rain, which a httle interfered with the enjoyment of the spectators. The attendance of the ?o onn leryI ery S° od > numbering at least 14U0U, and the sports were on the whole exceedingly interesting. The running matches were peihaps the most exciting, and special interest attached to them in consequence of several visitors from other «wtncta competing. Amongst these wore M. Gibbons, of Christchurch, a stronglybuilt and determined runner; T. Organ, of limaru, who showed a great deal of speed and sameness in the Mile Handicap; W Henderson, of Waikouaiti, who proved himself good at both running and jumping ; and „ ' Inve rcargill, a pedestrian of no Bmall ability The Australian runners Uoodfellow and Shepard wcro amongst the entries, but neither of them tfrinnod. Our local crack, .). M'Phenwn. lias been eurteri mg of lato from a cold, and, therefore, it is no wonder that he "did, not occupy a more prominent phi** than he did in the nrst distance of the Caledonian Handicap. Scott won this race right out with a little in hand,, coming in first at each distance. The Mile Race was very exciting, it looking very open until the last fifty yards. Burk, a great popular favorite, won it in very good time—m fact, the best amateur time yet made here, and, if pushed, he could have done it in some seconds less. The walking match furnished another good struggle, but we fancy three miles is too great a distance for these sports ; :t occupies too much time, and people lose all count of taw the wmpetttan aft getting on.

Next to the raceß came the wrestling, and in these competitions some of the toughest straggles we have seen for a Jong tune took place. In the hammerthrowing match Matheson was again to the fore. The quoiting and bagpipe competitions extcnd|over today. For some reason, possibly owing to the Bmall prizes offered, the number of entries for the various Scotch dances was very small, the rule being one entry for each event; consequently one of the usual prominent features of these meetings was almost entirely absent. The management on the whole was very good but the booth reserved for directors and representatives of the Press was allowed to bo rushed by the public at an early hour of the day Plenty of music was provided, the Caledonian brass band playing almest continually during the day, and being relieved occasionally by peripatetic bagpipe players. The following were the results of the various events:—

For the second heat Goodfellow (scratch) w »; Henderson (14 yds) did not start; but, M'Pherson being allowed in by the competitors, six ran. M'Pherson came round most of them in good style, but could never get up to D. S. Miller (19 yds) and if. Stohr (16 yds) who finished first and second. J. White (9 y£s), T. Organ (13 yds), andß. Knox (35 yds.) were not placed. Time, 52$ sees.

The run off showed only five starters, Gibbon being an absentee. White soon went to the front, but Scott collared him 150 yards from home and won a slashing race by a foot after a hard contest with Henderson and Gillies, who finished second and third, White being fourth. Hoare had little difficulty in disposing of Pink, and the same may be said of Mowson and Lyons ; but a good struggle took place between Allen and Tiffen. The latter unfortunately threw himself over, but subscSuently he threw Allen right over his back, 'n their final meeting Allen rather as-' tonished the spectators by throwing Tiffen cleverly. In the second bout Mowson and Hoare gained a fall each, but the former ultimately won. This left Mowson and Allen with the final result between them, and it proved a rather easy thing for the little fellow, who disposed of his opponent in his favorite fashion by dragging him over his shoulders. After two long bouts between Campbell and Tiffen without either gaining a fall the latter gave in.
