Hutchinson : I am the hoens.e cf the Prince Alf<ed Hotel, in Gr.at King street, Dunedin. The prison r wa: in my employment for six years. He ltif i about eight months ago. I notice the cheque now produced. It is drawn on the National Bank of New Zealand in favor of Kobott "Walsh for the *umof 13, and is signed "John E. Hutchinson." The signature to the cheque is not mine ; it is a forgety. I did not bank at the National Bank of New Zealand. Morris Tondut, licensee of the Rainbow Hotel, Goorge street, deposed: I know the prisoner. I renumber him being in my hot 1 in the latter end of October last. He pulled out tin cheque now prod-iced and asked mi to cash it. I asked him whose cheque it was. He answered, "It in Mr Hu'chinson's cheque, of the Prince Alfred Hotel " I did not cash it for him tut handed ib back to prisoner.—Detective Bain deposer] that he was in tho Psinbow Hotel on the evening of the 28th ult. A f tcr piisoner left the bar he followed him and sapped him, and asked prisoner to show him the cheque he had asked Mr Tondut to cash Prisoner said he had no chrque, and did not a?k Mr Tondut to cash one for him. He then search-:d the prisoner, but d'.d not find the cheque Shortly afterwards he got a lamp, sc.vchcd the ground near where he stopped prisoner and found the cheque. He also found tho memorandum book produced upon prisoner, and he roticed the r.amo of J. E. Hutchinson written in that book. It was similar to the signature on tho cheque, and appeared to have been written by prisoner.—Constable Townsend deposed to having anested prisoner at Flag Swamp, near "Waikouaiti.—Prisoner, who reserved his defence, was committed for trial.
