DUNEDIN SCHOOL COMMITTEE

A special meeting of the Danedin School Committee was held in the secretary's office last evening for the purpose of nominating nine gentlemen as members of the new Education Board ; present—Messrs K. Ramsay (chairman), G. Bell, H. S. Fish, J. Robin, P. Sherwin, E. Nathan, and Professor Macgregor. After the ballot had been taken, Professor Macgkeqor moved—"That the names of the gentlemen nominated, with the numbers of vote?, be published in to-morrow's paper." Mr Bell seconded the motion.

Mr Nathan moved the following amendment, which was seconded by Mr Sherwin : —"That the proceedings of this special meeting be not published for fourteen days." The amendment was lost and the motion was carried, Messrs Ramsay, Robin, Bell, and Macgregor voting in its favor, and Messrs Fish, Sherwin, and Nathan against it. Of the sixty-nine gentlemen nominated for election as members of the Education Board, the following nine were chosen by the committee :

Mr Jambs, who had officiated as scrutineer, inquired what he should do with the balloting papers, and, on the motion of Mr Shbrwih, they were destroyed.

• THK EDUCATIONAL INSTITUTE. Mr D. White, secretary to the Educational Institute of Otago, wrote that a deputation from the institute was desirous to wait on the committee for the purpose of urging the desirability of authorising a week's holiday at Easter, so as to enable every teacher in the district to attend the annual meeting of the institute.—Oh the motion of Professor Macgregor, it was resolved :—" That the ' Dunedin district schools bo dosed from the Thursday preceding Good Friday till Monday, the 29th April,"

SCHOOL ACCOMMODATION. The secretary of the Education Board wrote that L 3.000 had been voted for a new school in Dunedin, and L 350 for enlarging the South school.—lt was resolved "That the Works Commit©© be requested to inquire and report concerning an available site for the new school, and also to ascertain the committee's relation to the Middle District school reserve in Stuart street."

Professor Macgregor's name was added to the Speoial Committee, consisting of the chairman and Mr Bell, for the purposes of furnishing the Mission House and All Saints' school, and deoiding how many children shall bo received into each of the District schools, the Government regulations as to space to be adhered to as near as possible.Professor Macgregor thought that the only chance of awaking the community to a sense of its duty with regard to this matter of school accommodation was to refuse to admit more than a specified number of children. MISCELLANEOUS. The Bar. A. R. Fitchett's application for the Free Sohool in Stafford street for mission services was granted. Mr Kyle's resignation as second master of the Albany street school was received. The Rev. R. L. Stanford wrote recommending that Mr Walker, master of All Saints'schooL be employed by tho committee. It was resolved—" That Mr Walker be invited to send in his application as per advertisement."

Several accounts were passed for payment. The Chairman mentioned that the teachers' salaries were in arrear, but they would be paid monthly in future.
