A LADY B.A.

P r f? nt tV on . of Hie degree of B.A. t° Miss Edgar of Auckland, Bishop Cowie and the Eev. David Bruce made speeches highly comnli mentaryto the lady’s abilities and the high honor ■he had attained. Dr Cowie in saluting tlfo oldest and at the same time the youngest Bachelor of Arts, who is a lady, in New Zealand or the British Umpire, said he himself submitted to no higher in. tellectual test for other degrees than that which has admitted to that degree. As to the value of the degree conferred os Miss Edgar, be testified that it

was quite as good, and in some respects, more valuable than an ordinary B.A. degree conferred by Cambridge ; certainly, in his time. The ad-mi:-sion of a lady to that degree was the triumph of a great principle upon which the community might fairly and reasonably congratulate itself. Mr Bruce, who, like Bishop Cowig, is a member of the Senate of New Zealand University, said it was customary to estimate *he value of these things by comparison. Now, the standard of examination in some .Scotch Universities is even higher than that of Cambridge. The standard of the University of Victoria was. until lately, the highest, but the standard of the University of New Zealand is even higher than that of Victoiin. It is now the highest in the world for admission to a B.A. degree, such as the degree Miss Edgar has obtained. Miss Edgar has received an appointment in the Canterbury Ladies’ College at a salary of L3OO a year.
