In His Old Quarters.— George Maddison, an old vagrant, was charged with being on the premises belonging to the Gaol authorities without lawful excuse —The arresting constable deposed that at 1 a.m. he discovered the accused in the prisoners’ shed at 8^ quarry. The place WAS difflcuit of access, anfl wItRSSs was of opinion knnll r i 80liC I J Au i . have had » previous ledge of it,—Prisoner accounted for his S'SCflefi >li the shed thiswise:—He had ill td Shfttn, and having taken some isky in his tea he mistook the shed for a temperance boarding-house. The ease was adjourned until Wednesday next to enable him to call witnesses. Sunday Liquor Traffic.— Police v. Jas. Campbell, of the Crown Hotel. In this case, heard last week, his Worship now gave judgment as follows In order that I might be able the better to test the evidence of the witness Heywood and to arrive at a proper verdict I have, in company with Detective Bain, visited the premises of the accused, its the learned counsel for the defence observed, the case for the prosecution rests solely upon the evidence of Heywood; but lam unable to detect, either from the manner in which he gave his evidence, or in the evidence adduced by the accused, any reason why full credence should not be given to at least so much of his evidence as is necessary to support the information, and therefore find the accused guilty of the offence with which he is charged (the rum and peppermint having been supplied to Heywood by the accused’s barmaid in the discharge of her ordinary duties as his servant). Having found the accused guilty of the offence I have now to consider what penalty should be inflicted, and looking at the extreme difficulty of getting satisfactory evidence in these cases, I think it should be somewhat exemplary. The accused is fined LlO and costs.
