THE POLITICAL SITUATION.
To the Editor. Sir, —I was thoroughly disgusted at the tone of Mr Macandrew's telograms, forwarded to the Governor "on behalf of the people of Otago," -which appeared in your issue of last evening. lam now of opinion that Ms Honor's stock of impudence and Arrogance is unbounded. What right has he te assume that an '' overwhelming majority " of the settlers of Otago are unmistakeably desirous of the continuation of Provincial Counoila ? Have the majority -or even onethe settlers of the Province ex pressed themselves favorable to the furtherance, existence, and operation of Provincial institutions ? Meetings, it is true, have been held in the suburbs of Dunedin, and resolutions passed condemnatory of Abolition j but in the face of this, I would ask—hare these meetings represented the unanimous expression of opinion of the inhabitants of the localities in which they have been feeld? Generally, the attendance at these gatherings has been meagre, and the principal business has been "cut and dried" by a few malcontents previous to the hour of meeting ; while the " leading " townsmen— Messrs Brown, Jones, and Robinson—are ever ready with a few ciap-trap, commonplace utterances ("arguments" by them called), expressed in the most fallible, wishwashy Btyle,|to run down any movement that does not exactly suit their pockets. On that ground, therefore, I think his Honor hae no right to assume that an over-whelm-ing majority aro disfavor<*ble to the AbolitionproposaJs. Were his Honor and his worthy henchman to "stump" the Province, I am positive they would find that the majority, in fact, three-fifths of the inhabitant?, are strongly in favor of Abolition, and to them my advice would be—organise an expedition of this nature, and study the results. "Time proves all things," and the game is worth the candle.—l am, &c, . „ n Citizen. Dunedin, October 5.
