The socoml annual compe ition amon / the members of Mr Lon ’a athU ic was held at the Gymnasium on Friday evening last, in the presence • f a good number of spectators, who seem, d to lake oons.de. Abe interest in the proue-tuinga I'f.eie were three prize-* to he competed for, in two com petitions The first was for a medal offered by Mr Long to the best all-round athlete, who was also held to be the winner of the Ladies’ Cup. which has to be won three times before becoming the property of the-boldhr. The mode of proceeding was a vefy good one, the competitors being kept in a separate room, and brought out one by one to go r.hr ugh their evolutions in the different branches. There.were only three Competitors out of the 150 members. P. Muir (wit-iUor of last year’s cup), R. Lockhead, aud \ burton. The following is the result ' Vaulting : F. Muir to the bc*t performer on the horizontal bar w*s then competed for by Messrs LwcWhead and. fprfou, and was easiy won by the forme;, the audience frequently andleudly applaud ing him for bis neatness. During the inter val, to give the competitors a spell, some twenty of the High School b ys, in uniform, went through several vaulting and other performances very creditably, and Mr Long himself gave a short exhibition upon the bar. The e-, eniug’s amusement ended by Mr Muir, in a short speech, presenting the cup t * Mr Lockhead, who rejjlied suitably ; and the company broke up expressing themse well pleased with the evening’s entertainment.
