THE WIDENING OF PRINCES STREET SOUTH.

To the Editor. # SiR. —I only became aware for the first time last evening tlat the Corporation is, in a manner, bound to the Provincial Government to carry out the widening of Princes street south. In all the many speeches and discussions which have taken place on this subject for some time past, all reference to this agreement with the Government has been carefully suppressed. Asa great number of the citizens appear to have been as much in the dark as myself, I will just show hew this agreement stands. A few years ago the Provincial Government, in consideration of the City Corporation widening Princes street as far as Jetty street, entered into an agreement to give the Corporation certain reclaimed lands in Crawford street and the vicinity. This land, or at least a portion of it, was leased by the G rporation not long ago ; but although leased, it, is still only held under the agreement. In the face of this agreement, a number of the City Councillors, who I have no doubt call themselves honest men, are determined not to carry out their part of it, hut at the same time to stick to the land. Now, Sir, although I do not see any greater necessity to widen Princes st: eet south than Princes street north, yet I must say that if the members of the City Council now determine not to carry out the agreement which has been entered into with the Government, they will, if they keep the land, perpetrate a dishonest action; yes, such a dishonest action as would not be brooked in a private individual. — l am, &c., C, R. Chapman. Dunedin, July 31.
