RESIDENT MAGISTRATE’S COURT.
Friday, April 17. (Before J. Bathgate, Esq., R.M.) Drunkenness.—John Brown, a sailor on board the Maori, was charged, on warrant, with being drunk in Princes street on Saturday last.—His Worship ; Why did you not appear here before ?—Prisoner ; I could not help it. The boat went away to Lyttelton on Sunday afternoon. I authorised a man to appear for me, but you refused to deal with him.—His Worship ; Every man must appear personally. Is this your first offence.—Prisoner ; It is.—His Worship : Then the fine is doubled as you did not appear on Monday.—Fined 10s or 48 hours. CIVIL CASES Godfrey v. Prince.—Claim L 54, for certain loose boxes, the property of plaintiff, used by defendant.—Mr Stout for plaintiff, and Mr Smith for defendant, who asked for an adjournment, as defendant was not in town. He was perfectly willing, on behalf of his client, to pay the expenses of the day. —Adjournment granted till Wednesday. Trustees ol P. M. Grant and Co. v. John Sloane.—Claim L2l 8s 9d, for goods supplied to defendant and his brother Patrick on account of the former.—Mr Harris for plaintiffs, and Mr Stout for defendant.— Mr 8 tout asked for an adjournment for the defence, as his client, who was a carrier, was unable to attend on that day.—Case adjourned till Friday next. M‘Donald y. Campbell—Claim, L 7 10a, .value of a saddle and harness alleged to have been lent to defendant, Mr Harris appeared for defendant. Plaintiff was nonsuited. Judgment by default was given in the followisg cases :—Warrington v. Bardon, claim Ll, for trespass; Sutherland v. Wright, L 3 11s 91. for .work done.
