CRICKET.
By “ Looker On.]' Tue return jaiatab pf the Dunedin Cricket OJub with the clove# of I ido was played yesterday, and in $ victory tor the local club by $0 runs. r-hp H..C.C. went in first, and sent Allen and Momso# to face the bowling of O'Callaghan and Read. These two men made a good stand, and played steadily and well. Allen, especially, both in this and the second innings, played in better form than he has yet shown this pe#spn. He gave a difficult chanee in the slips to Uutffefl, who made a very clever catch The remainder of tfoe team! with the exception of HelUoar and Lambert, did not trouble the scorers much,. Hellicar played freely for his 15, and made some good hits. Mauisty shaped well, and will prove an acquisition to the club. The innings closed for 85. The fie'ding of the Lido nun was good. They work well together, and with a zest and hearty gQQii will which it is a treat to see. There was an'ciprie de corp* and a unity of purpose shown which ouV own eleven would do well
to imitate, O’Callaghan was not so successful as he deserved. He bowled well throughout, but the wicket did not seem to suit him. The holding of <*uthcridgo at the wickets, Martin at point, and Cutheld in the slips was hrst-rate. The Dido eleven scored 65 ; Martin, sen., contributed 10 in good style ; Reade, who was well caught at point by Alien, made 7; O’Callaghan played a reraarkably good innings for 10 ; and Cutneld very quickly pub 12 together. M‘Donald, who played as substitute for Hendley, was of great assistance to them both in batting and bowling. We were glad to see him shaping so well, as the club will be none the w<t e for the introduction «f some new blood. The Dido innings closed for After a short interval for lunch the D.C.C. went again to the wickets, and made 49, with six wickets down. The sooner the eleven are chosen from the eighteen the better. It is well known that six or seven of the eighteen cannot possibly uo—in fact have dec ined to go ;so that there can be no possible reason for delaying the selection of the eleven. The eleven should at once go in steadily for match practice, and next Saturday play eighteen of the best players that can bo got together. A match lias been arranged for to-morrow aft moon between the following elevens ; nlay to commence at 1.30: —Messrs Allen, Fergusson, Glen, el Hear, Hendley, Johnston, Man sty, Morrison, Macfarlan, Reade, -utclitfe, Stewart, and Tait will play Messrs Brown Begg, Cairns. Collinson Fulton (-T-), Holme s -, Keitle, Lambert, M acdonnell, Muir, Macdonald, Turton, and Thomson. As it is desirable that as much practice as possible be obtained in view of (he forthcoming Interprovincial Match, all the players named are requested to put in an appearance.
