There was nothing for it but J to return the money taken at the doors, ‘ which was done, but the management, while announcing that Miss Palmerston had broken I her engagement with them and left for the ' North, are determined to carry on, and tonight will produce “The Silent Woman,” and “ A Day after the Wedding,” with some music and dancing between the pieces. She has, however, hitherto found it ® very difficult to obtain dyes to colour the 1 stockings. She at last tried the flax, and 1 by a very simple prooess has obtained a very * rich brown colour. We have been wearing r stockings dyed with flax and find that in- > instead of becoming lighter or fainter in co--6 lour, they become always darker. Perhaps > this flax dye may be very useful for woollen manufactures. If so, what a valuable artif cle will the flax be to this settlement. The * root end .of the blade cut into short pieces * and boiled in soft water, produces the dye.” e The Chinese. —Some Celestials at s Cardrona have been taking the law into ; their own hands, and have suffered t sequences. They far outnumber the Euroa pean miners at Cardrona, and true to their -, character, made an onslaught on the latter on a account of some boundary dispute claims, i but they did not get the best of the row. However, a lawsuit in the R.M. Court, v Arrowtown, was the result, the Europeans claiming £l5O (£SO in each case) damages B for the assault. Mr Beetham, in giving t judgment for L 23, with LIS costs, expressed e nis regret that under the charges made, he , was unable to make the punishment greater. The assault had been a most dastardly one, * and in his opinion criminal actions should 6 have been brought instead of civil ones.
