Obituary.— Yesterday evening we received a telegram from Wellington announcing the death of Mr John Hay, editor of the Wellington Independent , by drowning. All who knew him will feel deep regret. His talent and attainments gave promise of a highly successful professional career, and the loss of such men is not merely of family bat of Colonial importance. Aquatic. —On the 15 th January will be rowed on the Heathcote, the principal rowing match that has taken place in the Colony for years, Auckland and Wellingt »n have taken steps to have their Province represented; but in Ot igo we are perfectly passive. We have always held our own in rifle shooting and cricket, and there is no reason why we should not occupy a premier pface in aquatics. We have the men ; the only, difficulty is to get them up to Canterbury. The example of Auckland, where the public are subscribing liberally towards defraying the expenses of the representative team of the Province, might he followed here; and if the Otago Yicht Club would only take the matter up, we feel sure something would corae of it.
