[The following was publisher! by us as an “ Extra ” to-day : —] Friday, December 17, The Tararua, Hagley, commander, entered this morning at daylight. She arrived outside at midnight. She left Melbourne on the 11th, and made the passage in five days nine hours. She experienced during the first part light, and in the latter fresh, south-east winds. She brings 27 chief and 36 steerage passengers, and 345 tons of cargo for all ports. Passenger List. —Messrs J. Carter, Wm. Gray, Orton, Rev P. F. Maloney, Messrs Wm. Beresford, F. Jackson, Swanston, Allen, M'Lean, Brownell, E. Gough, Cobb, Shaw, Musgrave, Horne, J. E. Brown, Carey, Haines, Miss Whitmore, Mrs Gonby, Mrs Warren, Misses Warren (2), Master H. Warren, Miss Petrie, Mrs Wilson, Mrs Smith and infant, Misses Smith (3), Master Smith, Miss Mostyn; and 36 steerage. Cargo List.—Dunedin, 143 tons; Lyttelton, 48 tons. Melbourne, 11th Dec.
Commercial. been a downward tendency, LI 2 to LI 3 being the ruling price. Wheat, 5s 3d to 5s 6d. Maize, 3s 9d, and advancing. Oats, 3s 9d to 3s lid. Sugar at auction fetched the following prices:—Ration, L3l 3s to L3l 9s; fine brown, L 32 3s; low to fine yellows, L 33 to L 35 9s; middling white, L3S. Three thousand cases of kerosene were offered at auctions, but the biddings were dull. The bulk was withdrawn; 2s Id to 2a 2d realised. Hennessy’s bulk pale brandy, 7s 6d; Blood’s stout, 9s 6d; twenty bottle J.D.K.Z., 16s 6d. Wool sales satisfactory. Greasy fetched s|fi to 9|d ; scoured, Is OJ-d to Is s|d; fleece, Is to Is s|d. Teas easier. At auction sales ex" Marquis of Argyle’s cargo, the prices fetched for Pekoes and Gunpowders were Is 3d to Is For caper, Is Id to Is 2£d. The fall in teas is attributed to the arrival of the Joshua Bates, from Hong Kong.
Eighty - one Australian diamonds fetched at auction from two to ten guineas each. Sailed. —’The Glenmark, for Lyttelton, on the Bth. Dr. Featherston and Mr Dillon Bell sailed in the Avoca on the 7tli inst. The quartz specimens found near Lyttelton were tested at Sandhurst, and yielded an ounce to the ton. The Flying Squadron sailed for Sydney on the 7th inst. Over one hundred deserters were left behind. The Assembly negatived a motion censuring Mr Miller, but appointed a Royal Commission to investigate the administration of the Lands Department under Mr Grant. The Government intend appointing experts to prevent the perpetration of Custom house frauds by false invoices. Mr MQQre, formerly Official Assignee, is appointed Comptroller of Sav-ings-Banks, Mr Taggart, the telegraph operator at Castlemaine, was killed by an excursion train. Mr Whiteman has been appointed Government whip. Mr S. M. Isaacs, formerly SolicitorGeneral of Hew South Wales, has been admitted a member of the Victorian Bar, Sydney. Markets are quiet. Flour has a lower tendency. At the wool sales prices slightly advanced. Large arrivals of sugar from Mauritius. Mr Henry Arthur is appointed the Governor's Private Secretary. Arrived. —Challenger, from Wellington on the 6th, She sails for Wellington on the arrival of the Squadron here. Novelty, from Auckland, Sailed.—Kate, for Auckland ; Southern Cross, for Lyttelton. Arrived.—At Newcastle—Duke of Edinburgh, from Dunedin. At Hobart Town—Union, from Dunedin. A storm passed over the City on Thursday, and much damage was done. The ketch Comet sunk in the harbor. The elections are turning out favorably for the Opposition. A strong sectarian feeling is evoked. Dv Lang is going to England. Mr Kennedy has been elected Mayor. Arrived at Newcastle, Adeline Burke from Lyttelton. Mr M'Culloch, magistrate of Bubbs, was killed while kangarooing. Captain Aivey was seriously injured. Dennis M'Kinlay has been sentenced to five years ; Patrick M'Kinlay to two years ; Rogers and O'Brien to jfive years ; and Shaw to six years. Hilliard, of the Custom house at Rockhampton, has been arrested on a fresh charge of embezzlement.
Archibald, convicted of Halligan’s murder, has been confined. Arrived.—At Newcastle, Camilla, from Auckland. Adelaide. The cargo of sugars by the Briton’s Pride brought full rates. New wheat 4s, and the corn market is without animation. Further reductions in the Estimates have been made. The Hon. Henry Ayers goes home next mail. The S. E. Railway Bill to the Victorian border at Mount Gambier, has been read a second time. The Willunga flax mill is opened.
