MINING INTELLIGENCE.

According to the Tuapeka Times, the accounts of the Tuapeka Mouth quartz reef are most encouraging. A trial crushing is shortly to be made. Some four or five years ago a party of miners working on the Serpentine discovered a quartz reef. At that time reefing was considered valueless in this province, and after sinking a shaft the party abandoned it. The recent discoveries, however have induced oth rs to test the value of the discovery Mr Hastie and party proceeded with the work, and their enterprise has been rewarded by the discovery of a payable reef. We have been shown some sixty or eighty pounds weight of stone taken from the claim, in which gold was generally diffused throughout. Claims have been taken up on each side, and should they prove successful there is no doubt that many more will try their fortunes iti that locality. It is understood that a trial crushing of stone from Hastie’s claim will shortly be made, when we shall be in a position to give a more positive opinion as to the value of the reef. In the meantime it would be well to wait until something more definite is known ere any great number of miners proceed there. Several shares in the Bendigo gully have changed hands lately. The prices realised have, as a rule, been satisfactory, but did not reached the enormous sums expected for them by some of the very sanguine shareholders. A sample of about 181bs of stone, taken from Barry and party’s claim, on the Aurora reef, Bendigo Gully, was lately tested. Jt yielded half a pennyweight of gold; but, owing to the very incomplete manner in which it was manipulated, it is more than probable that some was lost. A new reef is reported to have been struck in Bendigo Gully, a short distance from Colclough’s claim, by Richmond and party, who have applied for a prospecting claim. In the Mount Ida district sluicing is being prosecuted with good results, though the miners could well do with a more ample supply of water.
