(Before A. C. Strode, Esq., R.M.) DRUNKENNESS. John Hardy, for this offence, was fined 10s, and Phcehe Dyer, 20s. THEFT. Bridget Connor was charged with stealing money from a bedroom in the Cafe de Paris Hotel, Jetty street. It .appeared from the evidence, [(that the prisoner hgd been employed as housemaid of the hotel. Mf Couzens, the proprietor, having on several occa- | sions missed money, this morning touk the precaution of marking a half-crown, and four qnc shilling pieces. These he placed in a cashbox. in his bedroom.. He then left the room for halt ap hour, and on his return lie found that the money had been stolen. Suspicion was directed to the prisoner, and she was questioned as to the money, hut she persistently denied that she had taken it. i Information was given to the police, and i Detective Farrell went the house and saw the prisoner, who again denied having taken . the money. She was then searched by Mrs Couzens, who found concealed in her bosom the identical marked money, wrapped up in a piece of paper. She had other money of IU(T own in her dress pocket, ihe prisoner, in the dock, still denied that the money belonged to Mrs Gouzons Mr Ward, solicitor, said he had known fiep as a servant for several years, hut had ne-v&r Jipard of her being in trouble before. She was sentenced to sx weeks’ imprisonment, the Magistrate remarking that he was obliged to pass such a light sentence, owing to the want of classification at the gaol.
