A man named John Lawson one of a party engaged under Mr Moore, surveyor, of Oamani, in making trial levels for the proposed Enterprise water-race, Maerewhcnua, had a very narrow escape from drowning on Wednesday morning. The man in question was attempting to cross the north branch of the Maerewhcnua river, which was in great volume in consequence of the melting ot the snow in the ranges, and running v.ith great velocity, got into a hole, finding himself up to his armpits in water.
